The Role of Filtration Agents When Repairing Fire Damage in Caswell Beach

10/3/2023 (Permalink)

smoke out of window Our experience with Odor Removal can Help with Fire Damage Remediation in Your Home

One of the biggest responsibilities of fire damage restorers is matching the methods to the environment. It is of particular importance when picking the right deodorizing formulas and chemicals. There is such a thing as ‘one fits all’ for eliminating acrid smoke odors in a home.

There are several substances that SERVPRO® can use to tackle fire damage in Caswell Beach properties and neutralize bad smells. Some of the most common are absorption and filtration agents. They are designed to either filter the unclean air or absorb water from the air while re-odorizing the space at the same time.

There are two main types of filtration/absorption agents used by fire damage technicians.

Most sorbents are made up of three primary ingredients – sodium sulfate (the inert carrier), sodium bicarbonate (the absorptive compound), and a fragrance-emitting substance. They have a limited impact, so SERVPRO® never uses them alone. Normally, they get combined with more potent deodorizers and (sometimes) masking agents.

They are most effective on short-pile carpets because longer fibers can end up trapping sorbents and making them difficult to vacuum later. While this is useful for the eradication of smoky odors, it is not good for a carpet to be in contact with these chemicals for too long.

Activated Charcoal

The other option is activated charcoal. Rather than being absorbent, it is actually AD-sorbent. The difference is that instead of drawing odor particles into their chemical structure, they cause them to stick to the outside.

Activated charcoal is a type of high-grade wood, which gets treated with super-heated air (more than 600 degrees Fahrenheit). It causes the wood to expand, and the surface area of the material substantially increases. The bigger the size, the more odor particles the charcoal can pick up.

This substance is a common part of filtration deodorization procedures. Odors get eradicated by drawing affected air through filters of charcoal. These filters neutralize volatile organic compounds (VOCs) via adsorption. In some cases, SERVPRO® then re-odorizes the fire-damaged space by introducing a pleasant fragrance.

SERVPRO is Here to Restore Your Home after Fire Damage

Fires come in many sizes, just as homes range from small to extravagantly large. Large homes might have the luxury of spaciousness, but that can also cause homeowners to have a more difficult time detecting problems early. Fire is one such problem.

When a home in Ocean Isle Beach burns, homeowners often worry about the amount of fire damage their home suffers. However, the smoke and particles in soot pose just as much of a hazard to residents. These particles can carry carcinogens and irritants that make breathing difficult. SERVPRO removes all the damage, making your home, no matter how large or small, “Like it never even happened,” again, ready for your family to live in comfortable and familiar surroundings once more.

Removing charred building materials that once made up your home's interior can make your home seem bare, but it is part of the process we implement to prepare for new materials. Smoke-free, these materials pose no risk to your family's health.

Fire damage can impact any area of your home, from floors to ceiling, and we do our best to match new sections to undamaged areas. We know that continuity in your home, from one area of a wall to the next, is one of those small aspects that mean a great deal aesthetically. We want a clean, polished look for your home, just as we know your family appreciated before the fire.

Cleaning up the contents of your home is a job we perform by hand. Some items, such as knick-knack collections, clean up well on-site, in large tubs that we bring specifically for that purpose. Our team gathers together and transports other items, including large draperies and window blinds, for cleaning at our facility. Once completed, all steps, from the restoration of your home to cleaning and removal of soot and grime of your personal belongings and household furnishings, bring together your house, fully restored and waiting for your return home.

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

11/17/2021 (Permalink)

Burnt out hallway in home A terrible fire wreaked havoc on this Southport home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Brunswick and South Columbus Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

fire affected ceiling SERVPRO can help remediate your attic after experiencing a fire.

Out of town on a vacation that the homeowner had been dreaming of for months, he receives an alarming call from his neighbor.  There had been a fire at his Leland, NC home in Brunswick Forest.  His neighbor has assured him that it was just a small fire and the Brunswick County fire department has everything under control.  The fire was in his attic and was started by his HVAC system.  Structurally the home and roof were intact, his HVAC needed to be replaced and he needed his attic contents and some upstairs bedrooms cleaned.  His first thoughts were of SERVPRO.  He had used SERVPRO for water damage in his rental unit a few years prior.  The homeowner called SERVPRO of Brunswick and South Columbus Counties and sent an appointment for when he would be back in town.  Upon meeting with the SERVPRO Production Manager and going over the scope of the fire damage and the course of action, the homeowner was appeased.  The hardworking crews started the next day with the removal of smoke and soot from the home.  Within a few days, the team from SERVPRO of Brunswick and South Columbus Counties had things back “Like it never even happened.”  If you have smoke or soot damage from a fire in your residence or commercial building, call SERVPRO of Brunswick and South Columbus Counties today, 910-755-6717.  SERVPRO of Brunswick and South Columbus Counties is Here to Help!
